LARC Race #2, Saturday Jan. 25
Well, Father Frost has won and UYC has decided to cancel the LARC race tomorrow, Sun Jan 25. UYC has shut down their clubhouse and pavilion in anticipation of freezing and icy weather. I hope everyone stays safe and has taken care of their pipes and animals with the predicted 23 degree low on Sunday and 14 degree low on Monday. It looks like we will barely get above freezing all next week.
The remaining LARC races will be on Sat, Feb. 14 and Sun, March 15.
Stay warm, Dana

LARC Race #2, Saturday Jan. 25
I am blaming this weekend on Father Frost. We are scheduled to have our second LARC race this Sunday, but there is a slim chance we will not have a race. As many of you know, I usually don’t call off a LARC race until the skipper’s meeting at 11 am which will be at UYC for this series, but my biggest concern for this coming race is the driving conditions of the road on Sunday and that can’t be determined until Sunday morning.
I will make a decision about whether we will cancel the race at 8am on Sunday morning and if you are planning to race on Sunday (weather permitting) please let me by Saturday night and I will make sure you get an email or text message about what the status of the race will be on Sunday morning about 9am.
Attached are the results from race #1 on Jan 3, 2026.
Hopefully Father Frost will allow me to see you on the race course, Dana

LARC Race #1, Saturday Jan. 4
Mother Nature does it again, she can never be tamed. It rained all night on Friday and it seemed like it may continue all day Saturday and ruin our first race of the new year. But SURPRISE! SURPRISE! the rain quit and the wind filled in and we had a great 5 mile race from A to H. Now I didn’t say it was easy, because this was a race where you needed to be on your toes EVERY SECOND. The wind shifted and then shifted again and you had to keep a close watch because you had to be aware of all the mini islands that popped up in the middle of the lake where before they had been hidden. Unfortunately, the wind direction made it hard to set a course that had a nice windward leg, but it was an opportunity to see how FAST you were compared to everyone else while you were chasing the boats that started in ahead of you.
We had 12 boats that enjoyed this wonderful winter afternoon of sunshine and wind on this first race of 2026.
Here is the order of the finish:
Tony Stanley/ Hermes (tough to beat)
Stefan Schulze/ Melges 24 (love a new boat)
Tommy Sawchuk/ Breakaway (Triple Crown winner 2025)
Chris Jackson/ Lucifer’s Hammer (first time we have seen him in a long time)
Gary Umberger/ Uncle! Uncle!
Bailey White/ Griffin (good to see you back)
David Jackson/ Your Move
Cal Harris/ Vivace (first time in a LARC race, great job)
Matt Geiger/ Talon (hope we continue to see you)
Jim Chambers/ Wind Spinner
Bob Morris/ One Over Eight (first time in a LARC race, glad you joined us)
Next race will be on Sunday, Jan. 25. A big thanks to UYC for hosting this series and for the coffee to start everyone’s day.
See you on the race course,
Dana

LARC Race #1, Saturday Jan. 4

As we approach the New Year’s celebrations, we also begin a new sailing season. The first race of the 2026 LARC winter series begins on Saturday on Jan. 3. UYC will be sponsoring this series and the skipper’s meeting will be a 11 am at UYC. The UYC gate code is (see LARC email) and they will have coffee available at the skipper’s meeting. I have attached the NOR/SI for the 2026 LARC series.
But you don’t have to wait until Saturday to begin your first sailing adventure. Barefoot Sailing Club will be sponsoring the New Year’s Day Dean Holcomb Poker Run on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026 (more information at www.barefootsailingclub.org). This has always been a fun event to get back together with all your sailing buddies and test your sailing skills around the buoys.

This race will begin at the skipper’s meeting at the Branch House parking lot at 11am. I would like to caution everyone to be mindful of our permanent marks and try not to hit or run over them. I know it is sometimes hard to get close enough to the marks to grab a card, but I would recommend that you bring something like a “grabber” that will enable you to “grab” a card from the mark without actually touching it. Our permanent marks are fragile and are expensive to replace.
Good luck to everyone and may you have the winning Poker hand.

See you on the race course, Dana

LARC Winter series 2025
Winter #1, Saturday Jan. 4

I was enjoying my retirement from the job of Vice Commodore of LLSC when I was reminded that LARC races were were about to begin. I have attached the current NOR/SI for the 2025 sailing season as well as the racing calendar for this year.
We have had some incredible wind so far this year (all 3 days of it), as you know if you sailed in the Poker Run on Wednesday. Listening to my wind chimes tells me we will continue to have great wind tomorrow for race 1 of the 2025 LARC series.
Skipper’s meeting will be at UYC on Sat at 11am. If we need a gate code, I will send that in another email today.
Warm up your engines, pull out your sails, notify your crew and let’s start racing,
Dana
