LARC Fall series #3
Sunday November 2, 2025

Conditions are looking very good for this third race of the Fall series.  We will have a skipper’s meeting at 11 am at the LLSC clubhouse.

Please check in with me when you get to the skipper’s meeting so that I can include you in my calculations for the starting times.  I will announce the course and the starting times for each boat.  Don’t forget to  have someone on your crew that is responsible for recording and sending your finish time to me (404/849-1809).   Some of the finish times are kinda funky (technical term), so it might help to have your timekeeper on the bow of your boat watching the finish line which most likely will be between F and the Flagpole.  I use the “Exact Time” app myself and take a screenshot of the finish time, but please use something that will give you the time of day in hrs, min & seconds

When you report your finish time be sure you identify the boat  you are reporting for and if possible, please note who finished in front of you and behind you, this sometimes helps when confusing times are reported.  You will have 24 hours after the end of the race to report your finish time (I usually wait until midnight on Monday night).  I will be sending an email reporting the finishes on Tuesday.

Attached are the results for the first 2 races of the series.  The last race will be on Sunday, Nov. 16.  I plan on having a gathering with food after this last LARC race of the year at the LLSC clubhouse.  I hope to have some pictures taken during this series to show on the big screen.

See you on the race course,  Dana

LARC #2  Sunday, Oct 12, 2025

The forecast for this race was bleak but we still had 12 die-hard sailors show up for the skipper’s meeting Sunday morning. We planned a short race from T to X and back, because no matter what goes on in the main channel we usually have wind in Chattahoochee Bay and this day was no different.  Unfortunately, the wind clocked before the race and we almost had a downwind start.  But we ended up in a drag race to X and back and the asymmetrical boats and Juergen flew their spinnaker on a close reach to the finish line with enough wind so that most boats rounded the finish line and headed back out for a fun sail this sunny afternoon.

The next race will be Sunday, Nov. 2, skipper’s meeting at 11am at LLSC clubhouse.

Here are the results that were reported for this race:

  1. Tony Stanly, Hermes

  2. Gary Umberger, Uncle! Uncle!

  3. Sean O’Connor, Ella Va

  4. Mike Tataris, Tigress

  5. Jeff Freeman, Renegade

  6. Ben Owns, Meraki

  7. Matt Geiger, Talon

  8. Juregen Haeberle, Senorita X

  9. Ryan Jone, Peregrine

  10. David Jackson, Your Move

  11. Jim Chambers, Wind Spinner

I am working on putting the results in the computer and will send the overall results with the reminder for the next race.
On another note, we have a FUN regatta coming up on Oct 25-26, the Halloween Open Regatta (open to all sailors). There is lots of fun for the kids and adults, so come and join us for the last big event of the year.

Here is the link to registration: https://llsc.com/register/regatta/tRS1mhz5UF/class

See you on the race course,   Dana

LARC #2, Sunday Oct 12

The Fall season of sailing is now in full swing.  We have had some great winds, cool temperatures and football fanatics are everywhere.  We are now approaching the second race of the Fall LARC series on Sunday, Oct 12.  The winds should be coming out of the NNW with a pleasant 75 degrees.   We will have the skipper’s meeting at 11am at LLSC clubhouse where we will announce the course and individual start times.  The skipper’s meeting is mandatory for each boat and though registration is not necessary, it will speed things up at the skipper’s meeting.  Contact me if you need a gate code for the skipper’s meeting.  A gentle reminder that you need to report your finish time (hr, min, sec) within 24 hrs of your finish.  I recommend that you appoint a crew member to record or take a screen shot of your finish time and text to me at 404-849-1809.  There are several apps for your phone that will display time of day in hr, min, sec.

The Barefoot Open regatta on Sept 27-28,  had wind for every condition.  Though we all thought this should be the beginning of Fall, Mother Nature had different ideas.  The weekend started with an overcast sky and moderate wind, and we ended up with a light air race.  The wind degenerated after the first race, and the RC put us out of our misery and abandoned the races for the rest of the day.  We converged at UYC for an excellent feast late in the afternoon with the band Gypsy Thunder performing in the evening.  But as the races resumed on Sunday morning, Mother Nature again changed her mind and decided that we would enjoy some Fall wind and weather during the 3 races that were run with conditions changing from one race to the next.  The last race had gusty winds and Fall temperatures and tested our skills as sailors.

Congratulations to the winners of each fleet:
Low PHRF:  Gary Umberger in Uncle! Uncle!
High PHRF: Juergen Haeberle in Senorita X
PCRF Low: Kirk Jockell in Joy Ride 2.0
PCRF High: Tedd Meinersmann in Heatherset

A big thanks to the Barefoot Sailing club for always putting on a great party with lots of entertainment. See attached for all the results.

See you on the race course,   Dana

Sunday Aug. 24, 2025

I apologize for taking so long to publish the results.  I have a lot going on these days and I am trying to keep everything moving smoothly.  A big thanks to Juergen for helping me set up the course for this lovely almost Fall day.  We had good wind and a 6 mile course.  I heard from several of the competitors that there was a pileup at “D” mark but the first boat finished in 1 hour and 25 minutes, so it was a GREAT DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD.  Thank you everyone that came out and see you on Sunday, Oct 12.

FYI, I ask for finish times because the scoring program requires it to calculate the series summary of the results.
See you on the race course,   Dana

LARC Fall 4 results
Nov. 18, 2023

It was a spectacular end to the racing season.  There was a lot of competition for use of Chattahoochee Bay, but
we took advantage of the wonderful wind and balmy temperatures and set a 9.72 nm course to 11 and then to the long awaited return of R mark.

Because the unexpected competition for use of the race committee barge, we chose to use a pursuit start for this last race of the fall LARC series.  As we circled around X mark waiting for our start, the conditions seemed to be deteriorating, but the mercurial conditions of Lake Lanier prevailed and magically the wind filled in for a bunch of happy sailors.

The 2024 Lake Lanier Racing calendar will be published in the next week.

Coming up on Jan 1, 2024 is the Poker Run (go to barefootsailingclub.org) and then the first LARC race of 2024 will be Sat. Jan 6 with skipper’s meeting at UYC at 11am.

Here is the order of the finishes for the Fall #4 LARC race.  Overall results by fleet are attached.

  1. Uncle! Uncle!  Melges 24

  2. Highlander         J-22

  3. Noomo               Crowther 24

LARC #4, Last race of the season
Nov. 18, 2023

The end of the sailing season……. either great memories of races this year and good times with your sailing buddies  or anticipation of next year’s races on your new boat (you know who I am talking about) or your new sails or just looking forward to having another FANTASTIC year.

The opportunity to compete one more time comes this Saturday, Nov 18 in the last LARC race of the year.  Most likely we will have a pursuit start, but that will be decided at the skipper’s meeting at LLSC at 11 am in B  gravel parking lot by D dock (they are having a big high school regatta at the clubhouse and this will be quieter).   Please let me know by Friday night if you are planning to sail or even if you are thinking about racing one more time this year.

Look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday,    Dana

Great shot of the gorgeous wind and weather we had a LARC #3.

LARC #3

Oct. 21, 2023

What a gorgeous day for a race.  We had wind from 12-15 knots for our 8.73 nm course from A mark to 11 and back to F mark.  The wind shifted quite a bit from the skipper’s meeting to the beginning of the race.  We ended up having a pursuit start, which gave the boats with a higher rating an opportunity to sail in clear air (for a while anyway) and gave the boats with lower ratings something to chase.

Here is the order of the finishes:

  1. Uncle! Uncle!

  2. Hermes

  3. Meraki

  4. Maverick

  5. Tim Wilson

  6. Your Move

  7. Slingshot

  8. Wild Thing

  9. Wind Spinner

  10. Strega

Last LARC race of 2023 will be on Sat. Nov 18.  Skipper’s meeting may be at clubhouse or it might be in the B gravel parking lot.  We have a big high school event that day, so I will let you know what the plans are for this last race.

I am attaching the google drive for the LARC #3 video files and a big thank you to Jonathan Stewart for stepping up and providing some interesting observations on sail trim.

LARC race Sat. Oct 21

The LARC race this Saturday will be a pursuit race.  There will be a skipper’s meeting at 11am at the LLSC clubhouse with a “dirt up” after the race with snacks and videotape with observations by Jonathan Stewart.

Please send me a text or email of your intentions to sail.  We will give the course and individual start times at the skipper’s meeting.

Just a reminder that you will need to send me your finish time.  Helpful hint, I use an app called “Exact time- With DST dates” so that I start on time and when I finish I take a screen shot of the finish time.

End of the year is coming up fast, look forward to seeing everyone.

LARC Fall series race #2

Sat. Oct. 7, 2023

If there was any doubt that Fall is here, it was this wet and wonderful day!  What a surprise after the light air race we endured last Wednesday.  I know everyone had a fabulous time and a big thank you to Stefan Schulze, Amy Larkin and Chris Jackson for setting up the 8 mile course we had for this race.  It was not an easy race, but the kind of day that really makes you glad to be on the water.  The wind came out of NNW and I clocked wind speeds from 6-20 mph.  We got some fabulous videos, though I am still working on sound quality and I had some difficulty in that some of the videos at the end of the race were accidentally put on Slo-Mo video or I was running out of battery, but I did not include those.

A super big thank you to Chris Jackson who provided some very insightful observations of the participants in this race.  It was a challenging and fun afternoon.  Thank you everyone that participated.  After the race we all gathered at the LLSC clubhouse and had snacks and watched the videos.  What a great way to end such an exciting afternoon.

You will have 2 more chances to see your sailboat from a different perspective on Sat. Oct 21 and Sat Nov 18 with a 11am skipper’s meeting and 1 pm start.

The following is a picture of #77 Strega on a close reach going to “H” mark.  You can tell the wind speed by the huge wake behind Strega and her mainsail is fluttering.  Notice the whitecaps in the background, it was an exciting day.

Just a reminder of the LARC race on Sat, Oct. 7.  Skipper’s meeting at 11am at the LLSC clubhouse and race will start at 1pm at X island.

I will be videotaping the race again with another expert who will make observations about sail and boat trim.  We will have a “dirt up” after the race at LLSC where we will have snacks and showing the videotapes from that day’s race.

Let me know if you need a code to get into the gate (text me 404-849-1809).

See you tomorrow.

First race of Fall LARC series on Sunday, Sept 24

I am very excited about this Fall LARC series.  We have an exciting opportunity for our fellow sailors for this series and a welcome return to the good old days .

But let me start with the fun stuff.  I will be giving out the Fall 2022, Winter 2023 and Moonlight race series trophies on Wed. Oct 18 at the Encore Wednesday night series celebration and awards ceremony.  You don’t want to miss the SUPER COOL trophies that I will be giving out for these events.

Now to the exciting opportunity of this Fall LARC series.  Many of you remember in the Winter of 2022, Greg Fisher and Greg Griffin followed LARC sailors around the racecourse and took videos of individual boats and make comments on sail trim and boat handling.  It was quite enlightening but sadly it took almost 4 months for us to see these videos.  I loved the idea and talked to some of the most experienced and respected sailors on the lake and asked if they would do the same for each race of the LARC Fall series races and got many positive responses.  For those of you who would like to see those videos, follow the link

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1_n654GO6qWM5odiYQUlOF67NVksaUxkI?usp=sharing

This Sunday will be the first race of the Fall LARC series sponsored by Lake Lanier Sailing Club.  We will have the skipper’s meeting at 11am at LLSC in the “B” gravel parking lot (turn left at the 4 way stop), this is where many people gather before Wednesday night races.  Please let me know by Saturday, if you plan to sail and if you need a gate code to get into the sailing club.

And for the first time in 2 years we are going to have an after party or “dirt up” at the LLSC clubhouse.  Snacks will be provided as we watch the videos of the participants in the LARC race.    I will be driving the powerboat for my sailing expert as he gives practical advice for each of our competitors.  I am very excited about all the sailing talent we have on this lake and look forward to some great advice and/or verification of our sailing abilities from our expert.

PLEASE JOIN US AT LLSC after the race for snacks, camaraderie and a video commentary from our expert.

I will not be at the skipper’s meeting, but Jonathan Stewart has graciously stepped up to run the skipper’s meeting.  I will be sailing in the Flying Scot Regatta this weekend, but I will hop from my FS to a power boat to help our guest videographer.

Look forward to seeing you on the race course,

Dana
